this report analyses the UK market for electrical accessories and is
based on a combination of primary and secondary research. The report
analyses the sector in terms of market size, key sector trends,
product mixes, key suppliers and distribution channels. |
The electrical
accessories market involves a wide range of products used for low voltage
(less than 1 kV) installations, consisting of three main sectors; wiring
accessories, low voltage circuit protection and low voltage cabling
systems. The market was estimated at around £1.6 billion in 2007, a
growth of 3%, continuing the trend of improved growth 2004-06 compared
with the earlier years of this decade.
Key factors underpinning
this improved growth rate include returning confidence to key construction
sectors such as commercial offices and also increased use of higher
specification systems such as integrated switches and controls. However,
a significant aspect is that increases in global raw materials prices,
especially copper and steel, have also added a measure of price inflation
to value growth in the market since 2004.
During 2007 low voltage
cabling systems continued to dominate the market in value terms,
benefiting from improvements to building regulations and other legislative
demands resulting in greater use of higher value products such as fire
retardant/resistant cable and fittings. The low voltage circuit
protection sector has also benefited from improved confidence in key
commercial sectors, but also from increased use of higher value consumer
units and the changing nature of housing completions in favour of
flats/apartments within the domestic sector.
The wiring accessories
sector has experienced some value growth at the upper end of the market
with greater use of integrated switches and control systems for electrical
appliances and fire, security and lighting systems. Import penetration
remains a key feature of the market with the lower value, white moulded
sector particularly vulnerable to low cost imported products.
In terms of suppliers,
the market is divided between a small number of larger international
corporations involved in a number of power/electrical fields and a larger
number of much smaller product specialists.
Current forecast
indicate annual value growth of 3-6% to 2012 when the market is expected
to reach just under £2 billion, underpinned by expected growth in the
public sector construction market, wider adoption of more integrated
switch/control systems and further improvements to building regulations
resulting in wider use of higher specification products.
