The UK market for building insulation was worth an estimated
£660m in 2006 and could reach almost £1bn by 2010, according to the
“Building Insulation Market UK 2007”, recently published by AMA
Research.
The report reviews
the building insulation market in the UK, providing comprehensive analysis
of different material sectors, including glass and stone wool, as well as
PUR, SPF, EPS, XPS and phenolic systems. In addition, the report provides a
detailed review of supply and end use sectors as well as providing a
forecast up until 2010.
The building
insulation market has witnessed strong underlying growth since 2002, buoyed
by the impact of the Energy Efficient Commitment (phases 1 and 2) programme
on the domestic retrofit sector. In addition, revisions to Part L and
increased construction activity have also helped underpin growth in the
market.
Glass wool remains
the most widespread material used in terms of volume, with key applications
including retrofit cavity wall and loft insulation, the HVAC and pipework
sectors, twin skin metal cladding and the timber frame market.
There has been little
change in the supply sector with Knauf , Kingspan and Rockwool remaining the
leading three companies in the overall market, while SIG and Encon remain
dominant in distribution.
Additionally, the
report forecasts the performance of the market until 2010 and estimates that
demand for insulation products, in particular glass wool, is likely to
remain strong, although performance is dependent on requirements of CERT
(formerly EEC 3) and whether or not private householders can be persuaded to
increase the level of insulation in their homes. Other key factors
influencing future performance include the amendment of Part L in 2006,
increased activity in the office new build sector and the projects started
under the government’s Building Schools for the Future programme.
The mix of insulation
products may also see some change in the next few years, particularly within
the housebuilding sector, which may see a move away from cavity wall and
loft insulation products in favour of insulated cladding systems.
