Despite a difficult few years, the UK floorcoverings market is worth over £1.7bn in 2012. While the domestic sector has been particularly hard hit by the downturn in the housing sector in 2008/09, there has been some recovery in 2011/12, though key commercial sectors such as offices and retail have been affected by falling activity levels. While market prospects for most consumer durables remain fragile in 2013, medium term forecasts indicate a slow recovery in the sector as consumer and business confidence steadily improves. 

Carpet remains the dominant floorcovering, with share having stabilised in recent years. Despite strong growth up to the mid-2000’s, wood flooring has lost some share over the 2008-12 period, with vinyl and ceramic tiles/natural stone having gained popularity.
