The
Garden Leisure Market is currently estimated to be valued at £575
million for the year ending 2006, reflecting a growth rate of 4% from
the previous year 2005. Consumer spending has slowed over the past three
years due to a lack of consumer confidence, less disposable income for
the high valued products and poor weather during key trading months all
of which have had a large impact upon the market.
The garden leisure market is currently recovering after
poor weather during the key trading months of 2006. The wet weather at
the start of the season continued through into May which was reflected
in the decline of sales.
2007 saw
positive growth in sales during the Easter weekend with temperatures
reaching 22ºc in some parts of the UK. Since then the weather has been
exceptionally wet, with June and July seeing flooding around the
country.
The overall garden leisure market is dominated by garden
furniture in value sales due to a combination of higher volumes and the
average selling price of the products being higher than that of
barbecues and associated accessories. When comparing the average selling
price of garden furniture with barbecues, garden furniture is estimated
to be around 46% higher.
The Forest Stewardship Council (FSC) have helped
contribute to the added value of wooden furniture in recent years, with
this trend set to continue in the medium to long term with environmental
issues becoming more of a priority. The FSC is an international
organisation who’s aim is to promote environmentally appropriate,
socially beneficial and economically viable management of the world’s
forests. Many retailers have been working hard to improve their policies
and have been removing furniture that has been made as a result of
ancient forest destruction.
At the end of 2006 the barbecue market was estimated to
have experienced a 6% growth. With outdoor living being promoted through
magazines and television programmes it has helped to increase sales in
recent years by portraying the barbecue as not only a novel method of
cooking but a practical piece of cooking equipment.
High levels of household penetration are driving the
barbecue market forward in terms of replacement purchases. The barbecue
is now in the mature stage of its product life with fewer first time
buyers and more frequent replacement or trading up for a higher quality
barbecue.
The barbecue accessories market includes a variety of
products such as, cooking utensils, fuel, patio heaters, flares, candles
etc. Between 2000 and 2006 the overall barbecue accessories market has
increased by 25% indicating significant growth during previous years.
Patio heaters at the beginning of this period were still in the growth
stage of the product life cycle and contributed to the growth of this
market by continuing to develop year on year by increasing value share.
However recently there has been a definite slow in the growth of patio
heaters primarily due to environmental issues.
The future of the garden leisure market is difficult to
forecast due to the unpredictability of the weather. However, the market
is expected to continue to grow in the medium to long term future.
