The
individual sectors of the roofing market have witnessed a varied performance
according to the latest edition of the ‘Roofing Market – UK 2007’ report,
recently published by AMA Research with the roof tiling market experiencing a
period of difficulty in recent years, while other sectors such as the metal
roofing have seen a healthy level of growth.
The report, which is
available for purchase at £625, reviews the UK roofing market including roof
tiling systems, roof felts & membranes, roof glazing and metal roofing in terms
of value with volume figures available where possible. The report also explores
the expanding green roofing and solar and thermal roofing products markets.
A change in new
build domestic construction in recent years, which has seen a switch away from
traditional style dwellings in favour of flat and apartment style buildings has
led to a difficult period of trading for the roofing market which has seen sales
suffer over the last three years. In addition planning policy such as PPS3
(ppg3) has in some cases restricted the overall amount of roof space available
in new build construction in the domestic sector.
The market for metal
roofing has benefited from a good level of new build construction in the
commercial and industrial sectors and in particular warehousing and office
construction have provided buoyancy to the market, while increasing use of more
aesthetically pleasing finishes on the roofs of domestic flats and apartments
has also aided growth. Investment in both the education and health sectors in
recent years has also benefited the metal roofing sector, while to some extent
has also helped the market for membranes and felts, particularly in the RMI
sector.
The market for
environmentally friendly products is also becoming increasingly important, with
a number of products including green roofs and photovoltaic systems seeing
increased popularity. This is an area that is likely to see an increase as new
homes aim to become carbon neutral by 2016.
Future growth is
dependent on a number of factors including the performance of the UK housing
market as well as construction in the non domestic sector and will also be
influenced by factors including initiatives such as “Building Schools for the
Future” and Olympic Construction.
