The distribution network within electrical products is complex, reflecting a wide range of products and a variety of end use sectors. This report focuses on those products purchased online and delivered to individuals or to a collection point via any distribution channel. The market for distributing electrical products online has seen substantial growth in recent years, with electrical products being increasingly sourced online by both contractors and end users. This has resulted in the market for online distribution of electrical products tripling in size between 2012 and 2017. Much of this growth can be attributed to many of the leading wholesalers and distributors have expanded their internet presence, launching transactional websites and starting to move towards ‘omni-channel’ services.
The major trend within the distribution of electrical products online is the use of click and collect which has made a significant difference to the way contractors purchase, allowing them to combine the convenience of on-site ordering with collection from a convenient store at a convenient time. Another key market trend sees companies widening product ranges offered through online channels and creating special online ranges and promotions in order to appeal to a wider audience and promote this type of distribution.
The most significant distributors of online sales are internet only distributors and electrical wholesalers. Internet retailers’ development of strong online sales platforms has allowed them to gain strength in lighting and appliances in particular. Electrical wholesalers still have room to grow their share of the online distribution market as many do not have transactional websites as of yet. Merchants and home improvement retailers have made progress within their online sales market share, but their limited involvement in the electrical products market restricts their activity within this sector.
Looking forward, growth in this market is likely to remain strong, supported by the presence and performance of companies such as Screwfix, Toolstation and Amazon within the online distribution market. Growth will also be supported by increasing changes to buying patterns with many preferring the convenience of click and collect or click and deliver to traditional purchasing methods as this save the tradesmen substantial time enabling them to focus on their core activity. While remaining strong, growth is not predicted to be at the same levels of previous years as it is likely to be limited by the lack of growth in the electrical products market as a whole ,caused by stagnation in construction due to uncertainty in the overall economy.
