This is the 11th edition of AMA Research’s Floor and Wall Tiles Market report. This edition covers the changes the market has undergone during the Covid-19 pandemic and the extent to which skills and materials shortages evident across construction, have impacted on the floor and wall tiles sector. Loss of UK manufacturers has resulted in increased levels of imports and a highly fragmented market.

Key Issues Covered in the Report

  • This report provides a history and forecast of market size, spanning 2016 to 2026. This is provided at overview level for the whole market and for each of the individual tile materials: ceramic and porcelain, natural stone, and others.
  • We also look at the split in market demand between wall tiles and floor tiles, for each of the main material types.
  • Among the push and pull factors impacting on demand of different types of tiles are innovations in production techniques and design trends. These have both played a part in the shifts in popularity and market shares that we see across the different product types. Intra-market competition is also compared with extra-market competition from alternatives to tiles.
  • This review of the market includes profiling all major manufacturers, suppliers and distributors along with their market shares.
  • AMA Research’s forecasts for future market growth are supported by comprehensive sector and trend analysis.

Some of the companies featured in the report:

H & R Johnson, Porcelanosa, Mandarin Stone, Welsh Slate, Original Style, RAK Ceramics, Burlington Slate, Tile Mountain, B&Q, Tile Giant, Travis Perkins, Ceramic Tile Distributors, Saint Gobain, Bassetts, Nicholls & Clarke Group Ltd and more.

Areas of Particular Interest

  • The market review includes analysis of the different end use sectors. Future levels of construction indicate where demand for floor and wall tiles is likely to be generated.
  • For example, uncertainty in the retail sector is lessening demand for new fit outs in the near future; meanwhile, spas and leisure facilities are recovering from the pandemic at a faster rate, thereby increasing demand for tiling products, especially in pools and bathrooms.
  • Imports have become a particularly strong feature of this market in recent years, especially from Europe but increasingly also from Asia. The report looks at how this is impacting availability, especially in the context of recent supply chain blockages.

KEY AREAS COVERED IN THE REPORT

Market Overview

  • The Floor and Wall Tiles market is a mature market, with demand from both residential and contract sectors. As such, it is subject to varying levels of consumer and business confidence, along with overall trends in the underlying economy. An overview of key factors across the UK economy is included as an Appendix in the report.
  • Market growth had been steady and low in the years following the Brexit vote, with growth of just 1% or 2% per year. Along with the rest of the economy, the sector saw a significant dip, of 9%, in 2020, however recovery during 2021 has been speedy, almost returning to pre-pandemic levels.
  • While the reduction in new build output during 2020 lessened demand for finishing products such as floor and wall tiles, an increase in consumer spending on their homes, including new kitchens and bathrooms, created demand. RMI has always been especially important for this market.
  • Closure of the BCT company in 2019 had a serious impact on the UK production of floor and wall tiles, this could have resulted in increased shares for remaining UK producers, but in reality, we have seen it compensated for by a rise in imports.
  • A high dependence on imports does increase the vulnerability of the sector to potential delays in supply and increasing shipping costs which are likely to impact on end users in the coming years.

Product Sectors

  • Having reviewed the overall market for floor and wall tiles, we look individually at each product group, based on materials. The largest group is for ceramic and porcelain tiles; tiles of natural stone are a smaller proportion – but highly important in certain sectors of the market; other tiles, such as those made from glass or metal, are clustered as a group, they are often used in smaller volumes for special decorative effects and so make up the smallest proportion of the market.
  • The report focuses on internal uses of floor and wall tiles, while acknowledging that there is increasing use of materials across both internal and external applications.

Market Prospects

  • As a mature market there was slow growth in the years preceding the pandemic, especially impacted by low consumer and business confidence in the wake of the 2016 Brexit vote.
  • Having dipped, along with the rest of the economy in 2020, a healthy bounce back during 2021 meant the market surpassed the 2019 level during the second half of the year; further growth is expected in future years.

Supply and Distribution

  • Taking each product sector in turn, we provide profiles for the main manufacturers, along with their market share and position. We also review the distribution map for the market, and factors that have influenced this, such as the trend away from DIY towards GSI (Get Someone In).
  • Important to this market, we look in particular at product imports, noting the growth of supply from low-cost producers in Turkey and India. These are challenging conditions for margins.

This report reviews the total floor and wall tiles market, looking at recent performance, trends, influences and forecast performance. Product sub-sectors of ceramic and porcelain tiles, natural stone tiles and tiles made of other materials are reviewed in detail to understand specific influences with regard to production techniques, design and end user demand.

Within the report there is a full PESTLE review, looking at the political, economic, social, technological, legal and environmental influences on the market. This sits alongside a review of key end use sectors that generate demand for floor and wall tiles.

With imports such an important factor in the market, we look at supply and distribution including profiles of leading manufacturers, distributors and retailers along with individual company and overall channel market shares.
