The UK floorcoverings market is mature and is heavily reliant upon levels of consumer and business spending, in turn dependent upon the performance of the economy. The housing and construction sectors are key drivers of activity, given demand from both new build and RMI.

The UK floorcoverings market was estimated to be worth £2bn at msp in 2019. However, the impact of Covid-19, which has resulted in severe disruption to businesses for several months in 2020, has taken its toll on the floorcoverings sector. The market is therefore expected to decline by 10% in 2020.

Covid-19 led to a decline in all sectors of the UK economy from late March 2020, also impacting upon the floorcoverings market. Whilst many retail outlets were not able to trade easily for months, given lockdown restrictions, sales of home improvement products performed well, as DIY chains were allowed to open sooner. This includes sales of laminate floorcoverings.
