This is the 16th edition of AMA Research’s Residential Furniture Market report – we’ve been tracking this market in the UK since 1989!

This edition covers the changes the market has undergone during the Covid-19 pandemic. 2020 was a difficult year for many sectors, but the kitchen furniture sector in the UK faired better than most, with just a 5% drop in traded value across the year. While there were casualties, particularly looking at high street brands, the focus on home and increased levels of savings has had some positive outcome for the kitchen furniture market and growth in 2021 will take overall market values to higher than pre-pandemic levels.

Key areas of insight include:

  • Importantly the report provides a history and forecast of market size, spanning 10 years. This is provided at overview level for the whole market and for each of the individual sub sectors of furniture, worktops and sinks.
  • The sub sectors are broken down further into their product and materials mix and influencing factors are addressed at overall market level and at the sub sector level.
  • This review of the market includes profiling all major manufacturers, suppliers and distributors along with their market shares.
  • AMA Research’s forecasts for future demand are supported by comprehensive sector and trend analysis.

Some of the companies featured include:

Howden, Wren Kitchens, The Symphony Group, Harvey Jones, Tom Howley, Moores Furniture Group, Ultima Furniture Systems, Omega, Dennis & Robinson, Crown Products, B&Q, IKEA, Magnet, Wickes, John Lewis, Homebase, AEG, Miele, Beko, Hoover Candy, Moben, Travis Perkins, Magnet Trade, Martin Moore, Oakwood Door Designs Ltd, T.K. Components Ltd, Trade Mouldings Ltd, Dream Doors UK Ltd, Rixonway Kitchens, Commodore Kitchens Ltd, Crown Products and more.

Areas of Particular Interest

  • It is particularly interesting to see how changing household structures and ways of living are influencing choices in the kitchen furniture market.
  • The level of innovation, competition and structural change is also significant, especially for such a mature market.
  • It’s worth keeping an eye on the trade data for these products too, as there have been fluctuations in imports over recent years and there is further potential for exports to grow, adding challenges and dynamism to the market.

Market Overview

  • Kitchen furniture is a mature market, largely focused on RMI (78% of installations are replacement kitchens).
  • While the housebuilding sector (and other sectors such as student accommodation) provide annual volume growth, value growth is coming from both higher specification products and the trend towards offering full service from design to installation.
  • The market has changed in the past decade from a dominance of flat pack kitchens sold for DIY installation (led by MFI) to a greater proportion of rigid kitchen units sold, primarily for professional installation (led by Howden).
  • While purchasing moved online during lockdowns, and websites remain an important source for product source and inspiration, just-off-high street or retail-park-based bricks-and-mortar stores are still an important part of the purchasing mix as customers want to experience the product they are looking to invest in.

Product Sectors

  • The main three sectors of the kitchen furniture market are kitchen furniture (cupboards, draws, appliance housing, island units, etc), worktops and sinks.
  • In this report we do not cover free-standing furniture (such as tables, chairs and dressers) but we do review the markets for kitchen appliances and kitchen accessories (including taps)- though these are not included in the market valuations.

Market Prospects

  • The combination of lockdowns, working from home and virtual meetings have placed additional emphasis on home surroundings which are now required to multifunction practically, comfort the whole family, and project the right image to those ‘dialling in’. This bodes well for the kitchen furniture market as homeowners’ aspirations to upgrade and renew are high (encouraged by social sharing sites).
  • Along with this, savings accumulated during lock-downs can contribute towards home renovations and improvements. Natural growth will therefore come from RMI work, especially primed by a buoyant housing market and increased levels of new build housing. Value growth will also be enhanced by higher specification – both materials and tech – and end to end service.

Supply and Distribution

  • Taking each product sector in turn, we provide profiles for the main manufacturers along with their market share and position.
  • We also review the distribution map for the market, profiling key distributors and looking at the shift in buying trends and influences from high street to online; and from DIY to specialist installers.

This report reviews the total kitchen furniture market, looking at recent performance, trends, influences and forecast performance. Product sub-sectors of furniture, worktops and sinks are reviewed in detail to understand specific influences and more detailed product break-downs, for example by materials or construction.
As a key driver for the market, housebuilding is reviewed, including future forecasts for new build. Alongside this the housing market provides additional stimuli as people move and/or improve. The changing nature of household structures, is being responded to by manufacturers through numerous options to make kitchen spaces more accessible and multi-functional for old, young and those with mobility challenges.

Along with our supplier review we look at different business models and consider the end-to-end service provided, matched to homeowner’s propensity to ‘get someone in’ rather than DIY. Leading suppliers are profiled and the market and distribution assessed with supplier market shares and channel shares.
