The UK lighting market is made up of the following three sectors: lamps, luminaires and lighting controls and components. Although these have been relatively separate categories in the past, the market is now witnessing increasing overlap between the sectors. Much of this can be attributed to the development of integrated lighting systems, such as equipment combining luminaires with lighting controls.

The market began to decline from 2018 onwards, falling in value by almost 8% between 2017 and 2019. Much of this was due to a sharp fall in the price of LED lighting products, a slowdown in construction output in certain sectors and rising economic uncertainty in the wake of the Brexit vote and its effect upon material prices and trading patterns.
Market value slumped by around 16% during 2020 as Covid-19 affected the UK, with many construction projects postponed or cancelled, while large sectors of end-user industries such as retail and hospitality were shut down for months. As the worst of the pandemic passed, the market began to recover with the economy largely reopening – in 2021, market value increased by around 2%.
