Market Prospects

  • Prospects for the office and home office furniture market through to 2023 major factors influencing short and longer term prospects.
  • Developments in the major product and market sectors.
  • Supplier and distribution developments.

The UK office furniture market has continued to improve in recent years, with a particularly strong gain in 2014 and good growth in 2016-18, despite the uncertainty caused by the result of the Referendum vote.

The market remains highly competitive with manufacturers in most sectors unable to increase prices to any great extent. In addition, the rise of e-auctions and e-procurement has facilitated further cost benefits for buyers, as large organisations look to make savings using the Internet to source more widely and more cost effectively.

There has been a lower level of activity in the public sector relative to the private sector as expenditure in the public sector has been cut. This has also put pressure on prices, since public sector buying processes are now highly visible and competitive.

Although growth is expected to continue in the period to 2023, it is forecast at a lower rate, due in part to the uncertainty of the Brexit process. Additional factors also include pressures on space in the South East, the highly competitive nature of the market and the continuing importance of the home office sector, factors potentially dampening value growth.
