The market for ventilation and air conditioning systems has been growing at a steady pace between 2016 and 2019, before a sharp decline in 2020 caused by the Covid-19 pandemic and its widespread impact on the construction sector.

Indoor air quality (IAQ) has become an increasingly important consideration, and particularly so since the start of the Covid-19 pandemic. There is growing evidence that airborne pathogens are constantly circulating around inside buildings. Good ventilation is therefore vital to help dilute pathogens in indoor air, reducing occupants’ risk of catching Covid-19 or another respiratory virus.

Environmental initiatives that have had significant influence on the non-residential sector include the Ozone Depleting Substances Regulation (ODS) which has banned the use R22 refrigerant to service or maintain existing air conditioning equipment. This measure continues to support the new build and replacement market for air conditioning systems using allowable refrigerants such as R32.

In the residential sector, the Future Homes Standard, to be introduced by 2025, will also have some notable impact on the industry. This standard requires new build homes to be future proofed with low carbon and energy efficient HVAC technologies. It is anticipated that homes built to this standard should have 75% to 80% fewer CO2 emissions than those built to current building regulations.

This new standard has led to revisions to Part L and Part F in 2020. The changes to Part L seek to prepare new dwellings to be ready for low carbon HVAC systems, putting forward a preferred “fabric plus technology” option which seeks a 31% reduction in CO2 emissions. Revisions to Part F 2020 are designed to implement new guidance to reduce the level of external air pollutants entering homes through ventilation.

In terms of product trends, there has been notable growth in energy efficient Variable Refrigerant Flow (VRF) air conditioning systems. Sales of compact Air Handling Units (AHU) have also seen good growth with the requirement to ventilate smaller, more airtight commercial buildings. Mechanical ventilation with heat recovery (MVHR) systems now dominate continuous system sales and are progressively installed in new build homes. Decentralised systems such as d-MEV extract units are also in greater demand.

The prospects for the UK ventilation and air conditioning market in 2021 are positive, with a strengthening construction pipeline of new work and RMI activity going forward. The market is expected to achieve annual growth rates of 3-4% in value terms between 2022 and 2025, with a more settled economic outlook and the increasing demand for more intelligent, energy efficient solutions.
