Encouraging Forecasts Show Growth for the Passive Fire Protection Market

Demand for passive fire protection products may be held back by the ongoing trend towards larger houses in the new build housing market, mostly at the expense of flats and apartments. It remains to be seen whether this will be sustained over the longer term, given the demand for smaller-sized, more affordable housing across most of the UK regions.
Within the non-residential construction industry, application areas such as commercial offices, healthcare, education, infrastructure and industrial will remain key end-user sectors for passive fire protection equipment. Penetration of products such as fire doors and fire-resistant cables, glass, partitions, and ceilings will remain heavily skewed towards these applications.
Anne Williams, Research Manager for AMA Research and Editor of the Passive Fire Protection Market Report states that,
“The market for passive fire protection is forecast to grow year on year from 2022 – 2027, outstripping growth in pre-pandemic years. Supplier competition intensifies with new market entrants and increased Mergers and Acquisitions driving down price and enabling key players to increase market share, geographical presence in the UK and other world markets.
Greater deployment of IoT technologies are expected to lead to more automated testing of various fire protection equipment, providing greater opportunities for integration across passive and active fire products to develop comprehensive fire safety systems which best meet new changes in legislation and regulations, particularly within industrial, and commercial end use sectors”.
In the short term, demand for passive fire protection products within commercial offices may increase due to the lapse of safety measures in many premises whilst properties were under-used during the pandemic. This is leading to increased demand in the RMI market for the retrofitting of fire protection products to bring buildings up to standard and meet current fire safety regulations.
New product trends occurring within the market over the next few years are focused on improving the aesthetic appeal, as well as functionality. The popularity of glass-based products which allow for greater ingress of natural light into buildings, for example, is expected to continue growing.
Greater deployment of IoT technologies is also expected to lead to more automated testing of various fire protection equipment, with passive varieties acting alongside and in partnership with active systems, e.g., smoke and fire alarms.
The industry continues to witness further merger and acquisition activity as companies seek to increase their presence in growth markets, as well as extending their geographical presence. Some companies have also been acquiring or opening new facilities to increase manufacturing output.
Anne concludes that,
“Demand for passive fire protection products remains underpinned by growth in the construction industry. Forecast growth within the new work sector between 2021 – 2026 will boost construction activity in sectors such as infrastructure (e.g., road and rail, networks, renewable energy) and industrial (e.g., warehouses).
Modest construction growth is also anticipated in end use sectors such as education, healthcare, and commercial offices, less in retail, hospitality, and leisure. Whilst residential output is forecast to increase steadily during the next few years reaching £99bn by 2026, an anticipated increase in output of almost 24% compared with 2022. However much depends on UK economic conditions, government spending, investment and business confidence, the availability of building materials and labour.
Overall, the outlook for passive fire protection looks encouraging with forecasts showing a steady upward industry trend throughout 2022 -2027”.
