Commercial catering equipment is a well-established, mature market with significant penetration of all products throughout the industry. Therefore, performance often follows that of the overall economy.

With the start of the Covid-19 pandemic in 2020, the UK commercial catering equipment market saw a sharp decline of around -16%. This decline may have been greater but for the Eat Out to Help Out scheme (EOHO), introduced by the UK government in August 2020. In addition, most catering establishments were permitted to provide takeaway food. This ensured that many eating places remained trading during the pandemic.

In 2021, the UK commercial catering equipment market bounced back, with the successful roll-out of the Covid-19 vaccine programme positively influencing confidence levels and expenditure. This recovery was despite the ongoing supply chain issues following Brexit, with a shortage of imported products and materials, increases in prices and longer lead times. In addition, with the loss of EU workers there is an ongoing shortage of skilled labour. Global transportation costs have also remained high.

In 2022 it is anticipated that the value of the UK commercial catering equipment market will continue to recover, albeit at a moderate pace. The market value will be influenced by the ongoing effects of the pandemic but also by the high cost of imports and particularly steel, given the current weakness of Sterling. Increasing energy prices and the effect of the current cost-of-living crisis on disposable income is yet to be determined.

While the pandemic has been extremely challenging for the foodservice industry, looking forward there is a number of exciting new concepts emerging. These involve the increased use of technology enabling greater efficiencies, also an increase in experimental dining, primarily driven by Millennials and Generation Z clientele, providing them with persuasive reasons for eating out.

Affordable, convenient, ‘grab-and-go’ solutions will also become more prominent, meeting modern consumer demands, especially from those who are on a budget and time poor.

As such, we estimate a modest recovery in the UK commercial catering equipment market in 2022, followed by more steady growth in the subsequent years up to 2026, alongside the anticipated recovery in the UK economy.
