Until Covid-19, the UK contract floorcovering market had been growing at a steady pace before it saw a sharp value decline of 14 % in 2020, as the construction industry halted. The decline was not uniform for all products, with vinyl sheeting performing better than expected in 2020 due to its use in emergency hospital facilities.
In 2021 and 2022 the market has bounced back with year-on-year growth of 6 and 4 % respectively, as non-residential construction resumed. This recovery is despite ongoing supply chain issues following Brexit. The market is not forecasted to return to pre-pandemic value until 2024, with steady expected growth of 2-4 % per annum until 2026.
The retail sector has been a major end-use customer for floorcoverings, but its uncertain future due to the rise of Internet shopping makes forecasts unpredictable. Any losses from this sector may be offset by increased refurbishment programmes, for example in the health sector.
Contract floorcoverings now make up approximately 49 % of the total floorcovering market (51 % domestic). This is up from 45 % a decade ago. Imports continue to increase their market share in value terms, driven by exchange rates performance of the £. Around 70 % of imports are from the EU, with Netherlands and Belgium being major sources.
Post-pandemic, antibacterial flooring products are proving popular especially in the health care sector. Technological advancements and design trends are also driving an increase in the range of products used in the contract sector. Installations with mixed floorcoverings are increasing in popularity due to both design trends as well as health and safety legislation to separate areas of a building. Advancements in realistic effects for vinyl flooring could take market share from natural stone or wood products. Wood, however, has good sustainability credentials, while carpet and vinyl manufacturers continue to improve recycling and reuse schemes.
