The 15th edition of the Household Textiles Market Report – UK 2021-2025 incorporates original input and primary research, it represents an up-to-date and informed report on the market for bed linen (duvet covers, sheets & valances, pillowcases, bedspreads, blankets, throws and bed-runners), filled products (duvets, pillows, mattress protectors & enhancers and cushions), bathroom textiles (towels, bathmats and pedestal sets), table linen and kitchen toweling (tablecloths, napkins, table-mats and tea towels).
At a time when many markets across construction have suffered up to double-digit losses, the Household Textiles market has prospered relatively well with overall market value down just 1% in 2020. Despite significantly reduced high street availability, household textiles have continued to be sold in essential retail and especially online. With people spending much more time at home, there has been a degree of ‘nesting’ – creating comfort through fabrics, often choosing a luxurious feel. Added to this, sharing home spaces via Zoom and other video conferencing, has been another driver for investing in smartening up the home surroundings with affordable changes.
Key content covered:
- This report looks across the range of Household Textiles – bedlinen, filled products, bathroom textiles and table linen and kitchen toweling – examining the trends that have impacted on their sales and levels of demand for different items.
- Both residential and commercial use of household textiles are considered, the two sectors having faired very differently during the Covd-19 pandemic.
- Alongside demand, the report reviews supply, with imports being a particular feature of this market, as well as examining the various distribution channels for household textiles in the UK.
Key areas of insight include:
- Particular interest in this report are the differences between residential and commercial consumption of household textiles; the trends which are driving consumer choices and impacting on demand for different product types and styles; and the level of export, especially considering the impact on trade from both Covid-19 and Brexit.
Some of the companies included:
John Cotton, Comfy, Fogarty, Christy,Trendsetter Home Furnishing, The Fine Bedding Co, Ruia, Herbert Parkinson, Rectella, Julian Charles, Download Bedding Co, Heirloom Fine Linens, Lancashire Textiles, Caldeira Ltd, Cleland McIver, Ashley Wilde, The White Company, Soak & Sleep, Linenbundle, Character World, Dorma, Sanderson Design Group, Bedeck, Acton & Acton, Turner Bianca, Thomas Ferguson & Co, Gingerlily, Plumbs, Beaumont & Brown, Edmund Bell & Co, Prestigious Textiles, Sheridan UK Ltd, dusk.com, secretlinenstore.com, Dunelm, wayfair.com, made.com, Marks & Spencers, B&M, SW Living, Platt and Hill, Brinkhaus, Quilts of Denmark, Pownall & Hampson, Simba Sleep, Devon Duvets, Dusel, theduvetstore.co.uk, Ottoman Textiles, evesleep.co.uk, AW Hainsworth & Son, Interweave Textiles, Ambassador Textiles, The British Blanket Company, The Throw Company, The Wool Company, Richard Haworth, Nisbets plc, Tablecloth Shop and more.
Market Overview
- The Household Textiles market is a mature market, with growth for many years being around 2 to 3 %. In 2020, many markets were severely impacted by the Covid-19 pandemic but the Household Textiles market held ground, ultimately down just 1% in the year. This was in a large part due to maintained spend in the residential market as homeowners chose to spend on more luxury textiles.
Product Sectors
- The bedlinen sector remained robust, with people not travelling they looked to spend on improving their home environment; filled products experienced the same only marginal decline in what is a very competitive market space; bathroom textiles benefitted from a strong replacement market and sales were relatively uninterrupted due to widespread availability of click-and-collect ordering services; the table linen market was however impacted both due to the widespread closure of restaurants and hotels as well as the inability to entertain at home.
Market Prospects
- Looking ahead, a boost to the market is anticipated during 2022 both due to retail outlets opening more fully thereby encouraging spontaneous purchases, but also due to the resurgence of commercial trade as restaurants and hotels re-open.
- While many of these businesses may have limited ability to invest in the coming year, their need for replacement products will be ongoing. As a mature market, growth is likely to settle back to the 2 to 3% level year on year through to 2025.
Supply and Distribution
- Imports are exceedingly important to this market with a significantly negative balance of trade for this sector in the UK. The Far East and Asia are key sources of imports, notabley China and Pakistan.
- While Household Textile products are available through a wide range of retail outlets, covering all price points, it has been online sales – through both pure online players and the online presence of bricks-and-mortar stores – that have captured much of the trade in the past year.
- Within the commercial market attention should be paid to laundry services; whether a business or organization buys its linen outright or operates on a rental basis from a laundry service will impact on the quality and type of product they invest in.
This report reviews the UK Household Textiles market in the UK and assesses recent developments within the overall market and also within individual sub-sectors. Aspects examined include market development, trends and sector analysis, as well as key factors influencing future development of the overall market and for each product sub-sector.
Despite the challenges of the Coronavirus pandemic, the market has been buoyed by online consumer spending, with the nation confined to home during several lockdown measures to reduce transmission of the virus. With holiday plans curtailed, households spent money on improving their homes to add maximum comfort, including updating decors and homeware items. Even closure of non-essential shops did not deter spending, with household textiles ordered online. However, the contract sector, especially hospitality, faced tougher times and mixed fortunes.
This review of the household textiles market assesses current market conditions and provides forecasts of future trends. At the time of writing, concerns over Covid-19 and Brexit continue to dominate, although the market remains robust, despite continuing price competition.
