The pump market is complex and fragmented in terms of end-use applications and distribution channels. As a result, the market is influenced by many issues as it is closely linked to conditions in key application industries such as oil and gas, water and sewage, power generation, marine, industrial manufacturing, and construction.
The UK Pump market fell by approximately 8.3% in 2020 due to the impact of Covid-19, however, this fall was mitigated by orders in hand prior to the pandemic. In 2021 revenues are expected to fall sharply due to decrease in new orders. Brexit did not have significant impact on the pump market apart from minor administrative burdens and transactional costs for imports.
Most areas saw a sharp reduction in output in 2020, however, the pharmaceuticals sector experienced increased demand boosted by Covid-19 as pumps are used in applications such as transfer and dosing as well as filling vaccines in vials. Construction output fell sharply in 2020, particularly in residential sector and the oil & gas sector saw a sharp fall in line with the fall in oil prices which has led to significant contraction of exploration and product. Going forward, the biotech, pharmaceutical and fire protection sectors are likely to remain strong due to demand created by the pandemic as well as change in fire regulations for high buildings.
