This is the 7th edition of AMA Research’s Utilities Construction Report, previous editions have covered all areas of the Utilities construction market; for this edition, the market is being covered in three separate reports, each addressing a sub-sector of the Utilities market: Gas and Electric; Telecoms and Water and Sewerage.
This report on Gas and Electricity Utilities Construction reviews in detail both renewable and non-renewable energy generation, distribution and storage. The report analyses the number, scale and location of projects for each energy source – including wind (onshore and offshore), solar, biomass, hydro, nuclear and gas.

Key Issues Covered in the Report

  • The report contains an overall assessment of the market, it’s dynamics and key influences as well as detailed information on project pipelines, regional analysis and profiles of key players in the market.
  • Analysis of planning applications and contract awards is drawn upon to provide forecasts for construction in each sub-sector through to 2025 along with commentary on market prospects.

Some of the Companies Featured:

EDF, RWE, SSE, Drax, Uniper, Intergen, EPH, Vitol, Orsted, ECP,

Areas of Particular Interest

  • It is particularly interesting to see how dominant projects relating to renewable sources of energy generation are in the project pipeline.
  • Looking back over the past five years, there has been a 70% increase in power generation from renewable sources. Looking forward over the next five years, 80% of projects, by value, are related to renewable sources of energy.

KEY AREAS COVERED IN THE REPORT

Market Overview

  • The energy market is a critical part of UK infrastructure with an emphasis now on energy security – gradually reducing our reliance on imports – alongside a push towards carbon neutrality. This puts focus on renewable ‘home-grown’ energy sources. In terms of project values, wind is seeing the greatest levels of investment, especially offshore, with investment clustered in North Sea regions. By number of projects, solar is seeing the majority of activity but with many small projects, UK wide.

Product Sectors

  • Construction projects in the gas and electric utilities market fall into three main groups, those relating to energy generation, energy distribution and energy storage. Of these energy generation is by far the largest at nearly £23bn, while distribution projects are closer to £1bn and storage currently half that.

Market Prospects

  • As the UK grows its proportion of energy output from renewable sources, such as wind and solar, and therefore has greater reliance these, it is necessary to manage the variability in their production. This increases the importance of storage, a trend that is clearly seen in the project pipeline with storage projects even in the first half of 2021 far outpacing previous years. These too are clustered in regions bordering the North Sea, in proximity to the energy generation sites.

The report contains an overall assessment of the market, its dynamics and key influences as well as detailed information on project pipelines, regional analysis and profiles of key players in the market. Analysis of planning applications and contract awards is drawn upon to provide forecasts for construction in each sub-sector through to 2025 along with commentary on market prospects.

The market is reviewed by energy generation, distribution and storage projects. Each energy generation source is assessed individually with regard to project pipelines and regionality.
This broad view across all projects currently active and planned in the energy market provides a detailed picture of the progress being made towards decarbonizing the energy sector.
