Rising temperatures in the UK, rises the commercial glazing market
The commercial glazing market in the UK is heavily influenced and dependent on the construction sector, with commercial offices, education, healthcare and infrastructure being the main end users. As the pandemic harshly impacted the construction industry, this resulted in an abrupt decline in the commercial glazing market.
According to the Office of National Statistics, construction output fell by 35% in Q1 of 2020-21. Despite the severe decline, construction saw its fastest rise in output for four months during November 2021, thanks to a rise in commercial work.
Within the commercial glazing market there are four main sub-sectors; commercial windows, ground floor treatments, curtain wall/façade glazing and roof glazing. The sub-sector which holds the largest amount of market share is commercial windows with 55%, followed by curtain wall with 20%.
Due to the rising temperatures in the UK, oversize glazing has grown in popularity, as the solar coating helps protect furniture and interior design from overheating. Another trend within the market is the use of thermal efficiency code in commercial buildings, as it is expected to increase the application of commercial glazing solutions in the building architecture.
Out of the large variety of materials which can be used for the framing, aluminum remains dominant. However, timber, PVCu, steel and composites also have substantial shares and sector strengths and give aluminum tough competition.
