Lighting products and equipment based on LED technologies have been one of the market’s star performers in recent years. LEDs are widely recognised as being highly energy efficient with a long life. This is especially advantageous in the commercial/non-residential market where the high volume of products required can make replacement of existing products expensive.
The technology works well with digital lighting controls, with the result that LED technology is increasingly well suited towards the smart lighting solutions now proliferating within the market. As such, the sector has rapidly grown to the extent that it has become the dominant technology used in lighting.
Several factors have underpinned the recent growth in the market for LED lighting. One of the most important has been the drive to reduce energy usage (and hence bills), prompted further by regulatory changes that have removed firstly, incandescent lamps and, more recently, most types of halogen lamps from the market.
Market growth has also been driven by the increasing light quality of LED products. Over the last few years, there have been huge advances in the quality offered by LED lamps and modules in terms of their light output and their ability to cover a wider spectrum of shades and colours. Warmer white light is now a feature of the market, whereas earlier LED lighting was considered excessively harsh and blue.
Although other energy saving lamps are available, LEDs are by far the most efficient and have the additional advantage of being easily controllable to avoid wastage from bright lighting by dimming or switching off altogether when not required.
Editor of the report and Head of Content at AMA Research, Abdul Tantouch comments:
“Despite the many changes and innovations brought about by the adoption of LED technologies within the industry, lighting remains a mature market. Growth within the market remains heavily dependent upon the performance of the UK construction industry, where any significant decline in activity can severely dampen demand for lighting products and equipment.”
